About us

About Authority Institute

A Malaysian business advisory and management consulting firm, built for the founder-led SME, operated by Authority Advisory Sdn Bhd.

Why we exist

Built for the businesses that built Malaysia

Founder-led SMEs are the backbone of the Malaysian economy, yet most business consulting is designed for large corporations, and most SME support stops at training and motivation.

Authority Advisory exists for the business in between: established, successful, typically RM5 to RM20 million in revenue, and increasingly aware that what got it here will not get it to the next stage.

We help these businesses become more systems-led and professionally managed, so performance depends less on the founder personally holding everything together.

How we work

Our consulting philosophy

  • Diagnose before prescribing: evidence first, recommendations second
  • Plain business language, not consulting jargon
  • Practical implementation, not reports that gather dust
  • Honest advice, including when the answer is "don't hire us yet"
  • Transfer capability: the goal is a client who needs us less over time

The team

The people you will work with

A compact senior team. You work with experienced consultants, not a rotating cast of juniors.

Dato' James Foo is a serial entrepreneur, business strategist and mentor who has founded, operated or advised more than 90 businesses across different industries.

Known for seeing patterns others overlook, James helps founders examine complicated business situations, identify the real issue beneath the symptoms and make difficult decisions with greater clarity. His approach combines commercial experience, structured thinking and an instinctive understanding of how business decisions affect revenue, people and long-term growth.

He is the creator of Authority Institute's Business H.E.L.M. and New Profits frameworks, which help business owners view their companies as interconnected systems rather than isolated departments.

James works particularly well with founders whose businesses have outgrown their current way of operating and who need a trusted thinking partner to challenge assumptions, test decisions and prepare the organisation for its next stage of growth.

Candy Moy

Co-Founder · Chief Executive Officer

Candy Moy leads Authority Institute's consulting direction, client engagements and the continued development of its advisory methodologies.

She specialises in making complex business challenges easier to understand. Working closely with founders and management teams, Candy connects what the business owner wants to achieve with what must change across strategy, operations, people, marketing and management.

Her strength lies in seeing the business as a whole. She brings together observations from interviews, financial information, process reviews and team discussions to identify where execution is breaking down and what should be addressed first.

Candy also leads the integration of artificial intelligence into Authority Institute's consulting work, helping SMEs move beyond isolated AI tools towards practical, company-wide systems that support better decisions, stronger processes and improved productivity.

She is often the bridge between vision and implementation: ensuring that good ideas are translated into clear priorities, workable structures and meaningful action.

Portrait of Rupert Lee, Marketing Specialist at Authority Institute

Rupert Lee

Marketing Specialist · AI Enabler

Rupert Lee helps businesses become clearer in the market and stronger behind the scenes.

As a Marketing Specialist, he works across strategic positioning, customer insight, product communication and marketing systems. Rather than beginning with advertising, Rupert examines the decisions underneath the marketing: who the business is for, what customers are truly buying, how the offer should be structured and why customers should choose it over the alternatives.

As an AI Enabler, Rupert helps companies identify where artificial intelligence can be introduced into their existing processes and workflows to create stronger, faster and more efficient operating systems. He studies how work currently moves through the organisation, where information is delayed, where employees repeat manual tasks and where decision-making depends too heavily on individuals. He then helps integrate suitable AI capabilities into these workflows so that the system becomes easier to operate, manage and scale.

Within Authority Institute, Rupert supports consulting engagements by translating business and operational requirements into practical AI-enabled workflows, internal tools and implementation initiatives that employees can adopt in their day-to-day work.

His focus is not AI for its own sake. It is using AI to improve how the company functions while keeping business judgement, accountability and people at the centre of the system.
