When a business owner first speaks to us, the conversation often begins with a list.
Sales are not consistent. Margins are getting thinner. Employees are not taking ownership. Customers are complaining. Managers are not managing. Marketing is not working. The founder is exhausted.
It feels like the business has many separate problems. But very often, these problems are connected.
Weak positioning may make the company difficult to sell. That difficulty may cause the sales team to rely on discounts. Discounting then affects margins. Low margins create cost pressure. Cost pressure affects staffing and service quality. Poor service creates customer complaints. Customer complaints return to the founder.
The founder becomes more involved, managers become less confident and employees learn to escalate rather than decide.
What appears to be six problems may actually be one business system producing six symptoms.
This is why Authority Institute does not immediately prescribe a solution based only on the first problem presented.
We look at the whole business
Our Business H.E.L.M. framework helps us examine how vision, sales, marketing, advertising, branding, accounting, finance, solutions, innovation, operations, management, human resources and talent management connect to one another.
We then consider the business results these functions must produce:
- Revenue
- Brand value
- Margins
- Market positioning
- Productivity
- Employee satisfaction
The point is not to make the business sound complicated. The point is to prevent the company from solving one problem in a way that creates another.
More advertising may generate more leads, but it will not help if the sales process is weak. More sales may increase revenue, but not necessarily profit. More SOPs may create documentation, but not accountability. More employees may increase capacity, but also increase confusion when roles and authority are unclear. A new system may digitise a process without improving it.
Good business advisory is not about introducing the most impressive solution. It is about understanding the relationship between the problem, the cause and the consequence.
That is the work we do. We help founders see the business as a whole so they can stop reacting to individual symptoms and start correcting the system producing them.
Are you solving the same business problems repeatedly under different names?
